“Experimental Cinema Ecosystem in Île-de-France”

Encounter with various structures (laboratories, workshops, distributors, publishers, programmers, etc.) involved in experimental cinema in the Ile-de-France region. More than 20 years have passed since the publication in 2002 of the manifesto “Expérimental ? C’est pas mon genre”, which enabled certain experimental film structures and filmmakers to receive subsidies. Where do we stand now? To define the world of experimental and alternative cinema as an “ecosystem” is to emphasize the way in which this world is made up of multiple networks of heterogeneous elements, both internal and external, which must interact and whose modes of interaction are constantly fluctuating. It’s something living, not static. As early as the 1970s, Isabelle Stengers and Ilya Prigogine showed how systems “far from equilibrium” - that is, not stable or fixed - allow new forms to emerge spontaneously. But the risk with this kind of system is always entropy, or the exhaustion and disappearance of the system. Today, on the one hand, we see the creation of a number of new venues and the institutionalization of old structures in and around Paris, but on the other, the weakening of public subsidy systems and threats of venue closures, etc. For the “ecosystem” of experimental cinema, then, how is this tension negotiated between the desire for institutionalization and stabilization - enabling the material continuity of these networks - and the need to make room for the emergence of new forms - of production, distribution, exhibition, etc.?
