Synopsis

This film is in fact a subsequent reconstruction and documentation of the original performance at Genre Experimental Film Festival in 1965. It consisted of the projectionist passing a strip of colour film (East German ORWO) directly in front of the projector bulb, occasionally pressing the film against the bulb, thereby producing on the screen the effect of the film strip gradually burning and disintegrating, with various colour effects. This truly methodologically radical film (the destruction of the film strip itself as the subject of its projection) was also conceived as an ad absurdum demonstration of how pointless “antifilm” was and how anyone could produce it. Zlatko Hajdler, in fact, was not a director but an amateur filmmaker who occasionally participated in the filming of ethnographic material. It was only in line with the conservative reaction within Cineclub Zagreb that he came up with this performance in order to demonstratively ridicule experimental filmmaking.
